Geriatric Drug Information Resources for CCSMH

 

Treatment of anxiety in older adults is a common clinical question.  The Canadian Coalition for Seniors Mental Health (CCSMH) has released Guidelines for the Assessment and Treatment of Anxiety in Older Adults.  GeriMedRisk has partnered with the CCSMH to provide drug information for the medications recommended and discussed in the Guidelines.

First Line Treatment:

• Escitalopram - Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor (SSRI)
• Citalopram - Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor (SSRI)
• Sertraline - Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor (SSRI)
• Venlafaxine  - Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor (SSRI)

Second Line Treatment:

• Duloxetine- Serotonin/Norepinephrine Reuptake Inhibitor

Third Line Treatment:

Not recommended (except in limited circumstances) 

• Quetiapine - Antipsychotic
• Pregabalin -  Anticonvulsant, Analgesic agent
• Lorazepam - Benzodiazepine
